Abu Dhabi GIS Day 2009

Growth.. Success.. Excellence

Under the patronage of His Highness General Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Centre (ADSIC) organised the second annual Abu Dhabi GIS Day, held on November 18 and 19, 2009, at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC).

His Highness Sheikh Hamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s Court, attended the VIP event and cut the opening day ribbon and toured the exhibition. The VIP event witnessed the formalisation of cooperation agreements between ADSIC and 21 of Abu Dhabi’s GIS technology champions. These entities from both the private and public sectors signed the agreements with ADSIC to ensure that the geospatial data they manage is always expanded, maintained and shared among all the members of the Abu Dhabi Spatial Data Infrastructure (AD-SDI) Community for the benefit of Abu Dhabi.

This major regional event also showcased the cutting-edge activities of Abu Dhabi’s GIS technology champions: the members of Abu Dhabi Spatial Data Infrastructure (AD-SDI) programme. These 36 entities from government, academia and the private sector use geographic information system (GIS) technology to help deliver location-aware, customer-centric e-services in Abu Dhabi. This year’s two-day event in Abu Dhabi was one of the largest and most broadly attended GIS Day events in the region. It brought together leaders, decision-makers, government executives, experts, educators and interested members of the public to see the latest in GIS technology advances and applications.

This year’s exhibition featured 36 AD-SDI exhibitors - more than double the number from last year, an expanded education area for students, a Geospatial Dome exhibit for visitors, and the launch of the second phase of the AD-SDI Geospatial Portal, providing web-based access to the AD-SDI community’s shared spatial data clearinghouse.

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology held by the AD-SDI community is a vital part of ADSIC’s responsibility for all government information technology and communications activities as it works to supports the Abu Dhabi government’s goal to build a world class, internationally engaged society within a balanced and sustainable development in economy, environment and social well-being.
